They settled in a clearing just beyond the treeline. “Rest,” Lucian called to the small troop of survivors. “They can’t act till dusk.”
“We must keep moving.” Janosh said, his own voice a little unsteady, there was a deep cut on his arm that festered black with silver poisoning.
“No my friend.” Lucian smiled, closing his hand on Janosh’s shoulder. “We must tend our wounds and regain our strength.”
Raze watched as Lucian drew the wounded Lycan over to the stream and cleaned the cut, all the while talking softly. He could see pain in Janosh’s eyes that seemed too much for the injury alone and remembered how Janosh throw himself back to try to reach the others. He edged closer, picking up the tenderness in Lucian’s voice. “We’ll go back for them Janosh. I will not abandon them. Not Gyorg. Not anyone. We’ll free him together.”
Raze withdrew as the Lycan leader cupped Janosh’s face and kissed his forehead lightly with a comforting squeeze of his shoulder.
Lucian dipped a cloth in the stream and was washing his face as he walked back towards Raze. “And what of you my friend? Are you hurt?”
“No.” Raze’s deep voice resinated in the clearing, dark and sonorous.
“I’m glad. And thank you,” he murmured, sitting on a rock at Raze’s side, “for fighting at my side today. You are truly brave.” Lucian’s smiled earnestly, if a little sad.
“We need more men if we’re going back in.” Raze said quietly, hyperaware of the warmth radiating off the man beside him.
“Yes.” Lucian replied tiredly, “But we need to regain our own strength first.” Lucian rested a hand on the younger lycan’s shoulder, levering himself up. “Rest.”
As Lucian walked away to check on the next group of lycans, every inch the caring commander; Raze wondered if anyone had checked to see how badly their leader was injured.
***
By nightfall Raze was on his way though the undergrowth, retracing his steps back to the holding he’d been taken from. If he could find more men, lycans or humans, Lucian would lead them. The elder lycan had the qualities and charisma of a strong commander and Raze found himself falling into step without a thought. This man he would follow. Not because he was told to but because Lucian had earned that respect.
He found the path easily, surprised by the sensitivity of his newly heightened senses. So much had happened so quickly after he was dragged into that room and bitten that he’d barely had time to take it all in. The jump from the castle wall was shock enough! But here in the open air, running though the silent night; Raze felt the full glory of the gift that had been forced onto him.
Until the moon rose.
He was at full speed, feeling the air fill his lungs when the first rays of moonlight clipped him, upsetting the balance of his body and sending him hurtling into the scrub. His body was on fire. The skin of his chest fought to contain his ribs, his knees screamed as they tried to bend the wrong way. Unable to fight back the agony; Raze howled in pain, filling the night with his cries.
Minutes passed like lifelines as his body tried to tear itself apart, helpless under the moon’s control.
“Raze! Raze you can fight it!” Lucian was suddenly there at his side, touching his face even as his teeth lengthen, “You are not an animal. You don’t have to change.” The elder lycan's hands were on him, shelter him from the moonlight as much as his slight form could. “Raze concentrate!”
Lucian searched the area, dragging Raze into the shelter of the trees with all his lycan strength. It wasn’t enough to block out all the light but it was enough to give Raze a chance. “Can you hear me?”
Raze nodded, biting back his pain with all the courage Lucian admired in him, gripping Lucian’s arm as if anchoring himself.
“Forgive me my friend. I was preoccupied I didn’t realise you were yet to experience the change. You can master it. I know you will. But you need to feed.” Lucian pressed Raze to the ground and vanished into the dark.
A moment later the smell of blood filled the air, flooding Raze’s senses like lust. Lucian dumped an injured deer in from of him and sat back while Raze fed, wiping the blood off his own mouth. It felt good to hunt again. It had been decades since he was allowed out of the castle to run.
Raze broke from his frenzied feeding, tipping his head back in pleasure as the meat and blood cooled his fever. He let the feeling wash over him, feeling his strength fade with it as the pain took its toll.
“I know,” Lucian whispered, supporting him from behind as Raze crumpled, “it hurts. I remember. But you can control it. That’s what separates us from the beasts. It will be easier next time but the moon will still pull at you till you can control it.”
Raze nodded and dragged himself to his feet, wiping the gore from his mouth. “Thank you.”
Lucian followed him up, resting a reassuring hand on the big man’s arm. Without hesitation Raze stepped out into the moonlight, holding his arms out as if challenging the light to take him on. The pull was till there, as was the pain but less so. He could hold it back, choose not to be forced.
“You are truly astounding.” Lucian whispered, admiration bright in his voice. “I have never known anyone as brave.” He turned the tall lycan to face him. “Truly magnificent.”
Raze felt the heat of Lucian’s touch burning on his skin, more compelling that the moonlight. He wanted something, something he didn’t have the words for.
Lucian sensed it and stepped closer, touching Raze’s face and kissing him lightly. “I want this too.” he said earnestly, holding Raze’s eyes. “But there isn’t time. Forgive me.”
Raze returned his touch, feeling Lucian lean into him. He could feel his commander’s heart, the pain he held back from the others, the suffering he hid and more than that; his need for shelter, to let himself be weak in the presence of another.
Raze felt his own heart swell, this he could do. This he could be.
His commander’s keeper.
He returned the kiss, deeper this time, one massive arm cradling Lucian’s deceptively slight frame, running his fingers though the lycan’s long hair. “Another time then.” Raze’s deep voice resonated over his skin.
“Another time.” Lucian repeated, a little breathlessly as Raze released him. “When this is done.”
Raze lopped off into the trees, feeling his body shift and change under his control. Those words echoed his ears ‘when this is done’ but the sadness in Lucian’s eyes spoke different words. Words of despair rather than promise.
His eyes said ‘if we survive.’

Date: 2009-01-23 05:21 am (UTC)I saw the film last night with some mates and was trying (failing) to explain what I saw in the pairing. Lucian’s a passionate leader but you can tell how badly he’s hurting and only Raze (one huge man by the name of Kevin Grevioux who has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard) seems to see it.
Stray he maybe but puppy? Check out this pic of them http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2571143680/tt0834001

Date: 2009-01-26 07:06 pm (UTC)I'm really happy you wrote that amazing fanfiction, Raze/Lucian is my most favourite pairing. I thought it was great Raze had more screentime this movie, too, so at lest we could actually see his personality. And hear more of his voice...
You really wrote down what I also think is the core of their relationship, that Raze sees more in Lucian than Lucian maybe even wants other people to see. In short, thanks for the fanfiction. :)

Date: 2009-01-27 01:25 am (UTC)I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was watching the film with friends and couldn’t get them to see the pairing so I had to write it just to prove the point. I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling that there’s so much more going on between them, a deeper understanding than there’s screen time to show.
I’m hoping to write a second stronger piece set at the end of the film but I think I need to see it again get the setting right. For me one of the most powerful moments of the film was the look on Raze’s face as he came over the wall and found Lucian naked and injured. His expression at that moment says so much about his feeling towards Lucian...
I promise to post it as soon as I get it done and thank you again.

Date: 2009-01-27 03:21 pm (UTC)I think so, too. When I liked them after the first movie it was more of a crack pairing, but after this one I can definitely say they do have a very interesting relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.
I'd love you to write more about the pairing, you have a hand for keeping them in character. :)
Raze/Lucian is probably easier with Sonja dead (I don't see Lucian becoming unfaithful to her). That was definitely one of the moments; I also liked how Lucian would slowly shift more responsibility to Raze, I think it showed that he knew he could trust him.
(I wish I could say more about the expressions, but I'm in Germany and only watched the movie on the internet in, er, rather poor quality. I'm very much looking forward to visiting the cinema when they finally release it here!)

Date: 2009-01-27 06:57 am (UTC)I think there would be something between them before Sonja’s death but it would never be love in the same sense of the term. Companionship and mutual protectiveness perhaps but not love. I hope to write a second, more intense piece set after Sonja’s death but I think I need the see the film again first.
Thanks for commenting and let me know when you find good fics for this pairing.

Date: 2009-11-26 06:39 pm (UTC)But I just want to say that I really love your story. You are so good at portraying their feelings. Really beautiful, because they obviously have a strong sense of companionship and mutual understanding, as you said, and that might very well develop into stronger feelings.
Again really loved this! I'll be looking out for more of your stories! :)

Date: 2009-11-26 10:14 pm (UTC)I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I wrote it as a bit of a challenge to get one of my mates to see the connection between them. I had always planned to write a follow up but somehow it just never happened.
Thanks again and I love your icon.
