Title: I touch myself – song-fic
Fandom: Speed Racer

Speed tapped his foot restlessly. He was always like this before a race but this time it was worse. He had his red sock but was missing that only other thing that made his preparations complete – the photo of Rex he carried with his always. Something stupid had gone wrong with the Mach 5 at the last minute and they’d been late for the plane so he didn’t get a chance to run back inside and get it.
And now he was wishing he had. It would have been worth being late at the airport to have that familiar scrap of paper with him. Without it he felt naked and empty. Incomplete.
He leant back on the bench, closing his eyes against the bright lights of the change-room and focused, trying his best to visualise Rex in his mind.
Deep green eyes, always soft for him even when he argued with Pops.
Messy brown hair – never flat or tidy but tousled as his he’d had the top down or flat and sweaty as he took his helmet off.
That slight smile – even when they were in big trouble for crashing the Mach 5.
That last hug as Rex left the Racer house for the last time.
Speed caught himself, sucking a deep breath as the ache of losing Rex threatened to overwhelm him. He swayed slightly as a firm hand caught him.
“You alright kid?” X asked, looking down at Speed, concern dark in his eyes.
“I’m fine.” Speed shrugged but X kept hold of him for just a moment longer, waiting to see if Speed was sure.
“Come on Speed.” X said gently. “It’s time to race. You ready?”
Speed felt the warmth in X’s touch, even though the soft leather of his gloves and the warmth in his eyes even though the tinted glass. “Yes.” Speed smiled. “I think I am."
