Operation Camelot - Part One, Part Two, Part Three
Arthur held out his hand, every inch the noble prince as he effortlessly lifted Ezzy up into his saddle. There would not be enough room for them all to ride but a royal princess shouldn’t be made to walk. The set out towards Camelot at a slow stroll, Ezzy chattering away to Arthur with such a girlish squee in her voice Bitt and Munnin kept sharing an embarrassed smile.
Bitt noticed Alichay’s quiet and dropped back a step to level with her. “What’s up?” she asked, her voice low so only the younger Fangirl could hear.
“Nothing. Just watching. For someone so clumsy; he tracks well.” Alichay mussed quietly. “Is Munnin ok?”
“Think so. Why?” Bitt glanced up just in time to see Munnin stumble slightly, suppressing a groan as she shifted her pack.
Arthur noticed too, handing the reins of his horse to another knight to grab Munnin by the arm as she faltered. “You’re hurt.”
She bit back a small yelp as he touched her injured arm. “It’s nothing my lord. A small scratch. That’s all.” She tried to pull away but he had hold of the red silk veil she’d bound it with and was unwrapping it before she got a chance.
With a young knight’s assistance Ezzy failed to fall off the horse as she and the others clustered around Munnin.
“Why didn’t you say something?” Bitt chided as Arthur probed at the wound.
“It’s not deep.” Munnin muttered, not liking being the centre of attention like this. “I’ll clean and bind it what we get to Camelot.”
“No.” Arthur commanded. “You must let my physician see to it.” He pulled a water bottle from his belt and rinsed the scratch clean, his hand cupping her arm through the torn sleeve. “If those beasts were magical there’s a risk you’ve been poisoned.”
“I’m fine my lord. Please? For my dignity’s sake.” She pulled away carefully, letting Bitt rewrap her arm. “If it is your will; I’ll have it seen to but there is no need to concern yourself. I would rather continue and see the princess safely to Camelot before dark than waste daylight fussing over a careless scrap.” She turned to the young Fangirl. “Please my Lady, let me help you back into the saddle.”
“Laying it on a bit thick much?” Ezzy muttered as Munnin lead her back to the horse.
“This coming from the Queen of Squee?” she mouthed out of the corner of her mouth. “I hate being fussed over. Now get your butt back on the horse your highness and let’s get moving.”
Ezzy laughed aloud as the young knight, Sir Gawain helped her back into the saddle.
The rest of the walk was uneventful but even as she walked at Bitt’s side; Munnin could feel Arthur’s eyes on her. Alichay flashed her a small but knowing smile; this could be used to their advantage.
Once inside the walls Arthur sent a runner to find Merlin (much to Alichay’s amusement) and lead the way to Gaius's rooms.
The white haired man looked up from his book as they entered. “My lord?” he asked, eyeing the girls as he set down his glasses.
“This woman is hurt. She needs tending.” Arthur said haughty as he glanced around the space, clearly disappointed not to see Merlin.
“Of course my lord. Are you hurt?” Gaius asked concerned. There was blood on his tunic but all of it was from the wolves.
“I’m fine...”
Just then Merlin barrelled though the door. “Arthur! Your father’s calling for you. Oh! Hello.” He made a point of looking surprised to see the four girls (which earned him a smile from Alichay) but he was too busy looking at Arthur, dropping his voice to what he thought was a whisper. “He’s not in a patient mood.”
Arthur scowled and turned to Ezzy, “My lady. May I escort you to meet the King?”
“Oh Please!!!” The overabundance of exclamation marks making Bitt and Munnin wince and Ezzy took Arthur’s arm.
Bitt hesitated. “With your permission?” She glanced from Ezzy to Munnin and back again.
“Bitt go.” Munnin pushed as Gaius started to unwrap her makeshift bandage. “I’m fine and even in so friendly a court as Camelot,” she tipped her head to Arthur in a half bow, “I would rather someone be with our Princess.”
Bitt raised a questioning eyebrow. You sure?
Munnin replied with a nod towards Ezzy and roll of her eyes. Keep her out of trouble.
Bitt smiled and nodded, following Alichay and the others towards the throne room.
“So?” Gaius asked casually, pressing on the edges of the shallow scratch. “Who are you and what did this?”
Munnin chuckled as he washed the wound. “The big bad wolf would you believe.” She glanced after her companions, hoping like hell they’d stay out of trouble.
