Summary – for [livejournal.com profile] minyandu who wanted a happy ending to hostage situation. Sorry I don’t write action well babe but I hope you like it.

Tim crouched in the shadows of the Clocktower, waiting for Batman to join him there. Little by little Bruce had entrusting him with solo patrols, staring with a couple of blocks till now Tim had a territory of own. But Batman always made a point of keeping in contact and checking in to go over any problem areas together. After what had happened to Dick, Bruce wasn’t taking any chances.

It was a quiet night and Tim had finished his area early, content to linger in the shadows of the gargoyles and consider the strange turns of his life. He had gone from losing his father and being estranged from his mother, from being an orphan in all but technicalities to have a loving older brother and a mentor who respected and trusted him. Not to mention a grandfather figure who made the best oatmeal cookies Tim had ever tasted. He still wasn’t sure how he felt about all of this except for the fact for the first time in his life, Tim felt secure in his own skin and happy with who he was.

His comm. chimed in his ear. Robin, report. Batman calling.

“All quiet in sector B, At RV point ahead of time.”

Good, there is a hostage situation at the First Gotham Bank, four blocks east of your location. Gotham PD are handling it with Commission Gordon in command. The situation appears to be under control but offer your assistance if needed. Do not engage unless requested to by Gordon. I will rendezvous with you there.

“Understood. On route.” Tim was on the move as he signed off, shooting his jumpline and swinging out with fluid ease, all those hours training with Dick was paying off.

He landed two roofs away from the scene and climbed down with care, not wanting to spook any of the SWAT snipers who had taken up position around the edges. He respected their skills and had no desire to be shot by one of them. He eased through the lines without being noticed and waited patiently at the Commissioner’s elbow.

Tim had heard of Commissioner Gordon before he took on the role of Robin but didn’t realise how good the man was at his job till he discovered how much Bruce and Dick respected him.

“Can I help you son?” the Commissioner asked without looking up from the screen he was monitoring.

Tim smiled, “I suppose that should be my line, sir. Can I offer any assistance?”

The Commissioner turned and looking him up and down with a piercing gaze. “Not at the moment.” He seemed to be considering something but his radio crackled into life, ready signals coming in from all quarters.

Tim peeked over his shoulder and memorised the approach the police were planning. It was well thought out and if properly executed, would resolve the situation without bloodshed.

“Sir?” he asked quietly. “May I inquire what your people are using to pop the back door of the bank?”

Gordon eyed him wearily. “C4 shape charge. Why?”

Tim unwound a length of cord and a detonator from his belt. “Cyclonite. It delivers a more controlled blast.” He held it out to the Commissioner.

Gordon stared at Tim for a long moment before nodding to one of his officers. “Run this to E Team. Tell them to be ready in 3.” He turned back to Tim, watching the youth with piercing grey eyes. “Thank you.”

Tim nodded and stood back, waiting for orders.

Gordon ignored him as all teams once again signalled ready and the operation began. The execution was flawless – each team working together perfectly to pin down and disarm the gunmen without harm to the hostages.

Gordon nodded to Tim as the SWAT team reported clear. “Help them bring the hostages out.”

Tim ran, his cape bellowing behind him as the news crews gathered. He understood what the Commissioner was doing, there were kids among the hostages and Robin was meant to be the Boy Wonder, the children hero. His presence would calm and reassure them more than the sight of armed police.

He caught one little girl as she ran towards him, her cheeks blotchy with tears. “I’ve got you sweetheart.” He promised, picking her up and carrying her towards the waiting ambulance. “Are you hurt anywhere?”

She shook her head around the thumb she was sucking. He sat her carefully on the edge of the ambulance’s step and waved over a female EMT. “This lady’s going to have a look at you just to make sure you’re aright and then the nice police will take you home ok?”

The thumb came out with a pop. “Thank you Mr Wobin.” The girl whispered.

He reached up to pat her head. “Don’t thank me, thank the police. They did all the work.”

She smiled and waved at the hovering police officers. “Thank you Mr policemans.”

Tim looked up to see the Commissioner watching him. “It’s good work son.”

“I did nothing.” Tim answered as he trotted over to Gordon. “But I’m glad I could be of assistance.”

Gordon cocked his head and stared at him again, as if looking through him. “What’s your name son?”

“Robin sir.” Tim answered with a slight bow.

Gordon cracked a sharp little laugh. “He’s trained you well.” He looked sombre all of a sudden. “What happened to the other Robin?”

“He was hurt sir, but he’s recovering.” Tim answer, just as sombre. The Commissioner clearly cared what happened to Dick.

“So one Robin gets broken and you just replace him with another one?” He seemed angry all of a sudden and Tim stepped back, shocked by the bitterness of the Commissioner’s outburst.

A heavy hand settled on his shoulder from behind as Batman stepped into the light. “Actually his predecessor choose him. And choose well I feel.”

“How badly hurt is he?” Gordon demanded, his eyes flashing.

“He’s recovering.” Batman answered smoothly. “And he was every intention to return to the field when he does.” Bruce gloved hands curled almost protectively around Tim’s shoulders, squeezing ever so slightly.

The two men eyed each other and Tim got the distinct feeling there was far more to this argument. He also had the feeling he’d have to ask Dick if he wanted a straight answer.

Batman looked away first, conceding some unspoken point to Gordon. “We should continue our patrol Robin. The Commissioner clearly has everything under control here.”

“Be careful son.” Gordon muttered meaningfully as they turned to fire their jumplines. “The city needs its heroes.”

Tim turned, running his eyes over the well organised sprawl of police and emergency response personal. “It already has them, sir.” Even as he took off, he could feel the Commissioner’s smile follow him.

I love messing with your head! At the moment it's neither, there are lots of complex relationships but none of them have developed a sexual side...yet... we see how things develop...

I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Continuing to enjoy this 'verse and it's so very wonderful that you did this for minyandu. Your inclusion of Bruce and Dick's respect of Gordan and Jim's notice in the change of and concern for the well being of the first Robin just shows what a great detective Sir Gordan is in his own right. I just wonder what he and Batman have going on as indicated in your intense non-verbal conversation they were having, Hummmmms. Batman's assurance and protection of his Bird was gold.
Thank you for continuing this verse and for sharing it with us.

you're so sweet babe, and you do wonders for my ego.

Gordon is just such a strong character and sometimes clashes with the Bat over his...methods. Especially when it comes to using children in the field. I imagine they had words when Dick first started as Robin.

Thanks again!

Tim is amazing in this. Not only is he continually respectful and defers any praise to the others that deserve it (as well, though he's modest to a fault), but he has such a grace in his interactions with others.

I loved how you explored Bruce and Gordon's relationship here, with Tim acting as our stand in and observing some underlying tensions that are not expanded upon and leave us wondering and wanting more.

As always, great job! I look forward to the next piece in this 'verse!

Thank you sooooo much! I love it! (And I'm not making the voice you hate^______________^)

I love the part Tim entering the scene. His respect for Gordon's men and his way of being considerate. As I have difficulty having feeling for Canon!Tim, I think I'm sort of in love with your Tim now. I wish I have a brother like him!
And the interaction between Gordon and Bruce is intense but at the same time so heartwarming. I'm short of words to show my love now.

Thank you so much for this fic! It makes my day! *HUG* :)
