Summary: [livejournal.com profile] modestroad ’s [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic  prompt - DCU, The Robins, "Hey guys? What 'Dick/Tim' means?"

“Hey guys?” Damian asked quietly, not looking up from the screen of Tim’s laptop. “What 'Dick/Tim' means?”

Tim leant over, lightning fast and closed the lid of the tiny computer. “It means that you’ve ignored the age warnings on the website for a start.” He unplugged it and started packing it away, his face a little red.

Damian looked between his brothers with confusion, wondering why the use of their names in that way should garner such a reaction from Tim. Jason caught his eye with a quiet smile and a wink that clearly implied his questions would be answered later.

“You’re asking about slash?” Steph called, beckoning Damian to join her on the bed once Dick and Tim had gone out.

He sat cross-legged on the edge of the mattress, not wanting to infringe on her space. “I wish to understand what that configuration of their names signifies. I’ve seen it used on many of the websites pertaining to the band but I have no frame of reference for it.”

“It means Dicky’s on top.” Jay muttered with a dirty grin as he padded in to join them, flopping onto the bed at Steph’s side, one arm sprawled carelessly over her waist.

Damian’s nose crinkled in confusion. “I don’t understand.”

Steph sighed, pursing her lips as she tried to find a sane way to frame this. “Some of the fans, female ones especially are...interested in Dick and Tim’s relationship.”

“So I understand from the blog postings Tim regularly erases.” Damian nodded, no closer to getting it.

“Well, in the absence of gossip from us, they tend to make it up themselves.” She explained vaguely. “Kinda fill-in the gaps.”

“I’m still uncertain I understand what you mean.”

Jay snorted. “They wanna know if Dick and Tim have sex. Because no-one will tell them, they’re making it up for themselves.”

“I beg your pardon!” Damian exclaimed in a passable impression of Alfred. “So in the absent of empirical evidence that Tim and Dick are sharing carnal knowledge they...extrapolate?”

Steph stifled a giggle. “That’s one way of putting it.”

“Why?”

Jay raised his eyebrow. “They seem to enjoy it. Some of them are bloody good writers too. I’ve creamed myself reading some of the stories they’ve written about us.”

Damian blinked rapidly, trying to process this information as Steph pushed Jay off the bed for being crude. “Are Tim and Dick aware of these...stories?” His mouth was dry at the prospect.

“Dick, yes. Tim...” Steph started.

Jay chuckled. “I think babybird makes a conscious effort not to know. If Dicky found out, he probably want to read them together. In bed.”

This time he hit the floor and Steph pushed him away, screaming something about bastard and brain bleach.

Damian left them to their scuffle and went to find somewhere quiet to think.

When Tim found him, Damian was curled up with the laptop open at his feet, his eyes distant and hurt.

“You shouldn’t read these.” Tim chided quietly, pushing the laptop away and sitting down. “The fans have their own ideas about how this family works but we mustn’t let that interfere with our lives.” He pulled Damian into his lap with a protective hug. “Our affections may be unorthodox by conventional standards but that doesn’t make it wrong. Don’t let their judgements affect you.”

“It’s not that. I don’t care what people think about us as brothers.” Damian said quietly. “It’s just...”

Tim pressed a soft kiss to the top of Damian’s head. “What is it D?”

Damian turned storm grey eyes up to his brother, glossy with tears. “Why can they see the regard in which I hold Stephanie but she cannot?”

Tim glanced once at the page D was reading and closed the laptop. It was a fair question but one he had no answer for.

I kinda like the relationship between Tim and Damian. Tim, in my head anyway, is the wise one of the group, soft spoken and sensible.
