“Dickie? Tommy?” Simone called from below. “Someone here to see you.”
Tom froze, shock pale, his eyes wide with panic but Dick touched his arm, pulling Tom back from the thoughts in his head. “It’s ok Tom. Let’s finish this first.” He looped the ropes over Tom’s hand, running it between his fingers. “Remember what Mom and Dad taught us.”
“Check the ropes, before and after every show.” Tom recited by heart.
“And with every set-up and bump out. Exactly.” Dick brushed a hand though his brother’s hair. “We do this first and then we’ll deal with whatever’s happening down there ok?”
Tom smiled weakly at Dick’s touch. He understood his older brother was trying to calm him down but his heart was hammering in his chest.
Once the ropes were checked and squared away, they climbed together down to the tent floor, Dick’s hand resting protectively on Tom’s shoulder.
Anna nodded to them, “He’s waiting in trailer.”
Dick kept Tom behind him as they entered the trailer they called home. “Mr Wayne.” The elder boy nodded, slightly relived but still keeping his brother covered. “It’s good to see you.”
“Likewise Dick.” Bruce smiled politely, looking the young man over. Both boys had grown considerably since last he’d seen them. Dick at fifteen was lean and long with the fine muscle definition of an aerialist, Tom was still small and would most likely always be so but unless one knew, it would be impossible not to assume they were brothers. “Hello Tom.”
Hearing the man used his chosen name rather than the one only they knew, heartened Tom and he edged forward to shake the man’s hand. “Mr Wayne.”
“I’m sorry to drop in on you both like this but there’s something I need to talk to you about Tom. Perhaps in private?”
Tom’s hand went back, finding Dick’s wrist out of instinct and habit.
“I’ll stay if it’s all the same with you Mr Wayne.” Dick announced, stepping in to support his brother.
“As you wish.” Bruce pulled a small folder of papers from his briefcase. “I’m sorry to be the bearer of such news Tom but I felt you had the right to know. You biological parents were kidnapped while travelling in Haiti. Janet Drake died from poisoning and her husband is in a coma in Gotham General hospital.” He handed Tom a photo of the couple holidaying, their faces bright with sunburn and forced smiles.
Tom’s hands shook wildly as Dick eased the photo away, handing it back to Bruce. “What do you want Tom to do?” he asked defensively, almost in accusation.
“That’s entirely up to you Tom. If you want to come to Gotham I will gladly arrange the flights and you’re welcome to stay with me as long as you need.”
“Why would I...?” Tom trembled, leaning into Dick as his older brother supported him.
“You don’t have to decide anything now. Give it some time and think it over. You aunts have my number if you decide to get in contact with me.” He took a deep breath. “Just so you’re aware Tom - should Jack Drake not survive; his son Tim would inherit a considerable fortune.”
“I’m not Tim Drake!” Tom blurted, tears forming in his bright blue eyes.
Dick deftly stepped forward, tucking Tom behind him. “The papers you gave us?”
“Are very, very good and will hold up in any court.” Bruce assured, “Tom Grayson is your brother and will remain so no matter what name he chooses to use.” He turned to Tom. “I’m not asking you to do anything you don’t want to Tom. I just want you to know what options you have.”
Tom nodded, trembling as he let Dick guide him out of the trailer.
“Go check on Zitka,” Dick said gently, knowing how much Tom loved being round the circus’s star elephant. “I’ll be with you in a sec.” He watched his brother run for Zitka’s paddock before turning to face Wayne. “If you do anything to hurt him...”
Bruce held his hands out defensively. “I just thought it was fair he knew the truth.” He dropped his hands, touching the youth’s shoulder. “You know I would have gladly taken you both in. You would have been safe with me.”
“Aunt Anna and Aunt Simone love us, this is our home.” The boy’s eyes flashed defiantly.
“And I will fight to protect you from anyone who tried to take either of you from this home against your will. Just know I’m here if ever you need me.”
“I appreciate that Mr Wayne.” Dick held out his hand.
“Please,” He said, shaking Dick’s hand, “call me Bruce.”
