Dick found Tim in the garden of the Bed and Breakfast Alfred booked them into. It was a quiet, little place between two major gigs but thanks to Tim and Alfred’s supreme organisational skills, they had a couple of days down time.

And right now that was a good thing - Stephanie’s injured hand still hadn’t healed properly and the stress of taking the lead guitar was starting to show on Damian. As well as the youth was doing, the painfully high expectations he had of himself meant that he would fly into a depressive rage at even the simplest of mistakes.

The garden was beautiful in the afternoon sunlight, lush and cool dispute the heat of the day. Tim was sitting cross-legged under a willow, half hidden by the fall of the leaves. He had Steph’s guitar across his knees and his notebook open, scribbling annotations as he plucked at the strings.

“How’s it coming?” Dick asked, shimmying under the leaves to sprawl out at Tim’s side.

Tim shrugged, making a vaguely positive noise around the pencil between his lips. He plucked at the strings again, working though the chord progression.

“I like that.” Dick muttered, humming it back. “Have you started lyrics yet?”

“Some.” Tim stuck the pencil behind his ear and passed his notebook to Dick. He playing the piece over as Dick rolled onto his stomach, nodded along and he tracked down the page, his lips moving with the words though he wasn’t singing them yet.

Dick pulled a face on the third verse. “May I?” he asked, reaching up to slip the pencil out from behind Tim’s ear, brushing his fingers over the youth’s cheek as he drew away.

Tim craned to read the page upside down as Dick scribbled out and replaced a couple of words. “Yes. I can see what you mean; I’ve used night too often.” Tim mumbled, singing the verse back in his own soft voice. “Scans better too.”

“You two better not be making out under there.” Jason called, brushing the willow aside.

“Afraid you’ll miss out?” Dick sat up to meet him with a kiss, grabbing the back of Jay’s neck to drag him down to join them.

Jason stumbled, caught off guard by Dick’s sudden attack and landed spread-eagle over the lead singer. “Such a slut Grayson.” Jay growled as Dick pushed up against him.

“Like you’re complaining.” Dick purred as Jay fisted a hand in his hair and bit down on the soft skin of his throat.

Jason rolled them over suddenly, gripping Dick’s hips and grinding into him.

Tim held Steph’s guitar protectively above his head as his brothers playing. “You two finished or shall I leave you to it?”

“Sorry babybird.” Dick reached up to kiss Tim, grinning as the youth deepened the kiss, tasting all three of them on Dick’s lips.

“Hey this is good.” Jason muttered, flicking through Tim’s hand-written notes. “Put him down Dick. I wanna hear him play.”

Dick eased back, dropping a few more soft kisses on Tim’s lips before laying back down, taking the notebook back from Jay.

Jason starting to tap out a rhythm on the soles of his boots, his hands moving over his unseen kit. “No, no. Slow down the second verse.” He nodded along, finding the right pace. “Still wrong. It’s too Timmy for you Starwing.”

Dick nodded, worrying his bottom lip, still slightly swollen with kissing. “He’s right babybird. The second verse is you. You should sing it.”

“But I don’t...” Tim stammered, “I’m not as good as you.”

Dick reached up to brush the hair from Tim’s face. “You have a beautiful voice Tim.”

“That could work.” Jay nodded, listening to the music in his head. “Tim takes the second verse and you duet the fourth.”

“You ok with that Tim?” Dick asked.

“I...” Tim strummed though the chords again, feeling the shape of the song. “It could work.”

***

Dick belted through the opening verse the first time they played it on stage, feeling Tim’s words carry him back to Gotham.

The city casts her shadow,
another disappearing day.
Reappearing into something,
from nothing.

Tim was so lost in the beauty of Dick’s voice he tripped over the first line of his own verse but caught himself in time, moving upstage as he found the words.

I used to take these photographs,
The stage was set with buildings tall,
And I can't forget the sense of fate,
the night, it seemed to call (me).

Dick leant against Tim, bracing his shoulders against the young man and running his foot over Tim's ankle in reassurance as he moved into the third verse.

And it would breathe so tragically,
now just fading into fiction.
The streetlights blinked with disregard.
Nothing short of an apology.

Tim breathed in, feeling the air enter his lung, feeling Dick do the same. With the balance of two people who had trained together half their lives, they moved though the last verse.

And the sound of pain,
sounds just like the rain.
It’s starting to burn like
a constellation.

Dick brushed a kiss over Tim’s cheek as the last chord died and the crowded roared their appreciation. “Perfect.”

This is much better than I could have done with the lyrics! And the fic around it was amazing too, I like how Jay knew that the second verse was Tim's.
