munninHey F-list.
I’m trapped at home by a fierce heat wave and feeling listless. I need your help to get me writing so I’m calling out for prompts.
I’ve got a board of ideas but need your help. Pick a prompt and a fandom or pairing and I’ll do my best to write it for you. I’m open to everyone – Tribe, Speed, Bats X-fans and anyone else who might find this.

Once again you pick the pairing, I do, however, request that Rex makes an appearance in some fashion.

Date: 2010-01-15 11:04 am (UTC)Speed hastened to grab his jacket and helmet, his shoelaces still half untied as he ran for the pits. For reasons unknown the officials had moved the flag time up by half an hour and a full locker-room for drivers and mech were scrambling to speed though their final preps.
“How we doing Sparky?” Speed called, hopping on one foot to catch his errant laces.
“Better than most.” The lanky mech replied, sliding out from under the Mach 6. “Everything’s primed and ready. I’m almost glad I went over everything last night.”
“Sleep is for the weak. I keep telling you that.” Speed grinned, fumbling with the zipper of his jacket. He touched his breast pocket, a look of horror crossing his face.
“What’s wrong?” Sparky called, seeing the colour drain from his friend’s face.
“Rex’s photo...” Speed muttered, his breath short and shallow. “I thought I had it but...”
Sparky looked around frantically, knowing how important it was to Speed. He never raced without. Never set foot on the track without Rex next to his heart. “Could you have left it in your locker?”
Speed glanced over his shoulder in abject panic as the ‘All drivers to your cars’ call came over the speakers. If it was in his locker there was no way he could make it there and back in time for the start but without it...
“I’ll have to risk racing without it.” Speed swallowed resignedly. The lump in his throat matching the sinking feeling in his gut. “There isn’t time.”
Sparky wanted to argue, wanted to come up with a solution that didn’t involve Speed going out there like this but he was drawing a blank. They rolled the car out to the start, both with dread in their stomachs.
Speed sat behind the wheel of the Mach 6, waiting for the amber lights. The new race rules stated all cars had to be cool till the lights came on so there was an even ground and drivers couldn’t juice their engines. He wrapped his fingers around the wheel, his knuckles white beneath his gloves.
Racer X watched from the Shooting Star next to him; their cars almost close enough to touch. “Speed? Speed?”
It took his name being called several times before Speed heard. The Masked Racer leaned over, something small in his hand. Speed nearly cried with relief when he realised X was holding Rex’s photo. “Thank you.” He breathed, barely audible about the babble of the track.
“Rex’s always with you Speed.” X whispered, his voice low and gentle. “No matter what.”
Speed smiled back at him gratefully, tucking the photo inside his jacket as the weight lifting from heart.
Now he was ready to race!

Rex bolted down the hallway at the sound of Speed’s screams, bundling his baby brother into his arms. “It’s ok Speedy. I’m here. I’m here.”
The boy wept into his chest, his tears dampening Rex’s shirt.
“It’s ok Speedy. It was just a dream.” Rex crooned, rocking Speed gently. It’d been almost a month of this now. Every night Speed would wake up screaming. Every night it was the same dream – Rex dying in flames and ice. “I’m here little brother. I’m not going to leave you.”
And every night Speed clung to him, crying till he was weak with exhaustion and then fall asleep in Rex’s arms.
As he snuggled down, Speed cradled against his chest, Rex wondered if he was ever like this as a kid.
Or what it was Speed knew that he didn’t.
