Hey F-list.

I’m trapped at home by a fierce heat wave and feeling listless. I need your help to get me writing so I’m calling out for prompts.

Speed/Rex, harm for princessezzy

Always loved the look on Rex’s face when they got home.

Rex sat on the track his back against the wheel of the Mach 5, feeling the plinkplink of cooling metal, his baby brother curled up in his lap. As blood oozing from the cut on his head, Rex wondered whether if, in hindsight, letting Speed drive was the dumbest idea in the known universe. Only his arm around the kid’s waist had saved Speed when the harness snapped, unable to cope with their combined weight as they tumbled over the track, rolling twice before the car righted itself.

Speed himself was fine, made of rubber as all kids are at his age. A bump on his forehead and he’d knocked out his two front teeth, both of which had been wobbly anyway. Rex checked him over as soon as they stopped, flashing the light of his phone in Speed’s eyes to check for concussion. Speed wouldn’t stop grinning the whole time, babbling excitedly as Rex waited from his heart to slow down from a high pitched whir.

Eventually it wore off and Speed went from sugar-high to exhausted. Feeling in no shape to drive just yet, Rex let Speed crawl into his lap and fall asleep; figuring they both needed time before facing the wrath of their parents.

“It’s going to be ok Speedy.” He whispered, brushing back the tangled mane of his brother’s hair. “I make sure no harm comes to you.”

Years later as Speed watched the TV screen, barely hearing the shatter as his mother’s glass hit the floor, he wondered if Rex could have protected him from this – the harm of losing the brother he loved.

*wibbles* why are they so tragic? Why? Love how you capture how desperate Rex is to protect Speed, and Speed's feelings of betrayal without blaming him are heart clenching. It's amazing how much you manage to show in these short pieces, they're like pictures in time.
