Summary: While on tour in Australia, Steph is invited to be on the music quiz show Spicks and Specks.
For J with my love always.
Steph stepped into the room with a flourish, the folds of her skirt settling about her knees like a cloud. The dress was simple but it fitted her perfectly, accentuating the subtle curve of her hips and chest. Lilac cotton trimmed with imperial purple lace, her long legs clad in dark stockings that ended in her favourite purple docs. “How do I look?” she asked, almost shyly, pushing at the dark violet ribbon that held back her curls.
Jay looked her up and down. “You are not going on TV looking like that!” He said with mock sternness. “You are not leaving the house looking like that!”
“Why? Does it make me look fat?” She asked, genuinely worried.
“Hell no!” Dick called, darting across the room to take her hand before Jay could answer. “You look stunning! Too stunning. If we let you out, you may never come back. The whole country will fall in love with you and never let you leave!”
“You don’t think it’s too...purple?” She asked with a cringe, ignoring Dick’s protestations. “Spick and Specks is a really popular show here and I want to look good for it.”
Tim stood up, leaning in to plant a kiss on her cheek. “Not at all. It’s perfect.” He glanced over to Damian who was staring at her, boggle-eyed. “But it’s missing something don’t you think D?”
The youngest Robin scowled thoughtfully for a moment before vaulting off the couch and disappearing into the other room.
“Shall we dance?” Dick requested, bowing with the grace that would put a Disney prince to shame and waltzed her around the room.
Jay and Tim hummed the music as Dick and Steph whorled around, her skirt billowing out to envelop his legs as they turned.
Tim tapped Dick on the shoulder, bowing with equal grace. “May I cut in?”
Steph squeaked indignantly as Dick took Tim’s hand and waltzed him away. She glanced over to Jay who put his hands up defensively.
“Oh no! I don’t dance!”
“Rubbish Jay!” Dick called, turning Tim in for a dip. “Bruce had Alfred teach you, same as the rest of us.”
“And?” Jay scowled. “Just ‘cause I can doesn’t mean I will!”
Damian tucked something carefully into his pocket and bowed curtly, taking her hand. Despite the height difference, Damian was a good dancer, lacking in Dick’s grace perhaps but as good as any society gentleman. He held her hand and waist almost reverently, leading with practiced ease. He bowed as the music stopped, unfolding something small from his pocket and reaching up to pin it to her dress.
It was a tiny origami robin affixed with a pin. “It’s a beautiful dress but it needed something.” He said quietly, a little unsure. “I hope you like it.”
“It’s beautiful!” She exclaimed, “Thank you so much D!” She dropped a kiss just on the corner of his lips. “Gotta bounce, my ride’s here.”
“Stay out of trouble Blondie!” Jay called, grinning fiercely as she flounced out the door. “Better her than me!”
Tim wrapped around Damian’s shoulders in a comforting half hug. The young man face was flushed as he touched the spot her kiss had landed. “Very thoughtful D.” Tim said gently, steering the youth away before the other two could tease him.
Dick flopped down on the couch with a sigh, turning to grin at Jason. “Hope you’re not as much trouble to dress when you go on TV.”
“You what!” Jay demanded. “What the hell are you on about?”
“Oh didn’t we tell you?” Tim teased, “We put your name in for a show called Rockwiz when we get to Melbourne.”
Dick patted Jay on the thigh. “Better start planning your ensemble.”
Damian rolled his eyes as Dick hit the floor with a thump, Tim dancing away out of Jay grasp. Mad, the lot of them.
