Steph grabbed her guitar and headed outside, completely ignoring the noises coming from the bedroom. She found Damian sitting under a tree in the hotel’s garden, oud across his lap. “You ok D?”

He glanced up at her with a slightly troubled look. “I thought it best to practice elsewhere today.” He didn’t sound angry so much as...

“What’s up?” she asked, sitting herself on the grass at his side.

He eased the oud down, his hands cupped in his lap as he framed the words. “Does it not bother you...the way they...”

“The way Jay, Tim and Dick are with each other?” she asked, rescuing him from trying to frame that sentence politely.

“They refer to themselves as brothers and yet...” He gestured back towards their room. “Is it not a taboo in this culture?”

She cocked her head. “It is for blood relatives but...for us, not so much.”

“But they use the moniker in public and it seems from the comments left on the website that it’s the common view that they share...”

“A bed?” she offered.

Damian scowled at her. “I was going to say carnal knowledge

She reached out and ruffled his hair. “Somehow I shouldn’t be shocked that you’d use a phrase like that.” Steph stretched out, putting her guitar aside and flopping back, folding her hands over her chest. “They call each other, and you, brothers as a sign of respect, to show how close you all are.” She closed her eyes, feeling the heavy loss they all felt. “It’s also about Bruce and remembering what he means to them, to all of us.”

He heard the hurt in her voice and leant over, brushed a hand over her cheek to push the blond curls out of her face. “I consider...” he stated falteringly, “It is my honour to call you my sister.”

She opened her eyes, covered his hand with her own and brought it to her lips. “My brother.” She breathed, kissing his palm softly.

He pulled away, flushing and fumbling with his instrument. “We should practice.” He said, just a little too quickly.

She saw the faltering blush creep up his cheeks and sat up, reaching for her guitar. Their littlest brother was growing up fast and chasing the verges of puberty. How long before he was asking very different questions about what happened behind that closed door? “D...if there’s ever anything else you want to talk about...?”

He looked at her with dark, knowing eyes. “Actually...” he started, “I’d like very much to understand how you execute the cord progression during the No-Man’s riff so fast. I’ve tried but I can’t duplicate your actions swiftly enough.”

Steph laughed, pushing her hair back from her face. “Alright. Show me how you play it and we’ll take it from there.”
