Fic: Coffee and memories
Title: Coffee and memories
Characters: Dick, Damian, Alfred but with mentions of the whole band
Fandom: DCU Band!AU
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: All fun, no cash.
Author’s notes: 100% organic. May contain minor flaws and imperfections that beta-treated slash wouldn’t.
Summary: random slice of life that turned up on my head while I was making breakfast.
Damian woke early as always, carefully crawling out from between Dick and Tim without waking them. Not that he’d ever admit it but he slept better sandwiched between them, especially when they’d been on the road too long. The endless driving made him strangely anxious and left him with the desire to stay close to the others.
Jason would most likely laugh at him or tease him mercilessly and Damian couldn’t face the thought of Steph looking at him with pity, she saw him as a child enough already but Dick and Tim never turned him away. They never mentioned it the next morning or made a thing of it in front of the others. They just shuffled apart, making room between them on the squeaky hotel bed as he curled into Tim’s arms, huffing tolerantly as Dick pressed a sleepy kiss to his hair.
“Good morning Master Damian.” Alfred called quietly, setting a mug of the thick, dark coffee the band ran on beside his hand. “I need to acquire some more supplies before we continue our journey. Would you be so kind as to inform the others I’m gone shopping when they rise?”
Damian clutched his coffee like a lifeline. “As long as they don’t expect me to make breakfast.” He growled, all bat this time of the morning.
Alfred took a quick breath, caught off guard by the youth’s tone.
Damian looked up into Alfred’s unflappable face, seeing for a second a fleeting look of...something... “It’s ok.” He backpedalled quickly. “I’ll cook if I have to. I mean I can’t do worse than Grayson.”
Alfred shook his head, schooling his expression. “It’s quite alright. I won’t be long. No need for you to cook anything.”
“Alfred?” Damian asked dubiously. “Is everything alright?”
“Yes Master Damian.” Alfred patted his shoulder with a sad smile. “You are just so like your father in the mornings.”
Damian watched him go, lost in his own thoughts until Dick padded up behind him silently, pressing a kiss to the top of his head. “He’s right you know.” Dick murmured, wondering over to pour himself a coffee before flopping down on the couch. “You do take after Bruce a lot.”
Damian craned to look at Dick - his brother, his mentor, his bandmate, and followed him across the room to sit neatly at Dick’s feet. “Tell me about him.” He hadn’t meant for it to come out as an order but it hurt sometimes that the others had got to spend so much time with Bruce and he, so little.
Dick reached out, pulling Damian up onto the couch and into his arms. He took a deep breath, brushing the dark hair out of Damian’s eyes. “Like you, he was never a morning person. Couldn’t have a polite conversation with him till after his first coffee...”

Also, I got a plot bunny for this 'verse while I was in the bath. Something about Talia since hey, she's still around. She'd be a bit mortified that her son is in a band, methinks. XD

Ooh! I like that bunny! There’s a line in one of the backstory bits Justine and I are working on that might interest you. It’s part of a conversation happening between Tim and Steph via postcards while Steph is off looking for Cass. It’s very early in the plot, before Alfred and Damian had rejoined the others but I think it might foreshadow your bunny perfectly.
Big sis heard rumours that little D's mom is looking for him. But grandpa will make sure she doesn't get custody, he's our brother now. (Big sis being Oracle and Grandpa being Alfred)
I see a smack-down on the horizon

I believe that was one of the best 'Damian' fics I've read. I also think that you wrote him better than few of the DC writers.
Beautiful story!
